HEAVY LORD INTERVIEW : Wouter Geer – Drums [august 2006]


PRESENT YOURSELVES OUR READERS...

We are Heavy Lord from Hellevoetsluis, The Netherlands and we are a doom band. We like to play fucking heavy music with a brutal rock’n’roll attitude!


WHO ARE HEAVY LORD AS BAND MEMBERS?

Our band consists of four members who are Jeff and Wes - all riffs. Wes lee also does some of the vokill work as well. Then on the low end and lead vokills we have Steven and I am Wout, and I bash the skins!!


WHEN DID YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE BAND?

Somewhere in 2002/2003. I can’t remember the exact date.


WOULD YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE VERY FIRST BEGINNING OF BAND...

Wes lee and Jeff were always jamming together on slow and doomed out riffs and Sabbath off course, and wanted to do something with that idea. Then Steven, who also was a member of Wes lee's previous band, joined the ranks and that fitted. Then all they needed was a brutal drummer and they tried several but none of them succeeded. I already knew the guys as they were my friends, and I offered my services and HELL it fucking worked!! Heavy lord was conceived...


WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING-EFFORTS?

We immediately started to write our own songs as we don’t do covers, and recorded a rehearsal of a couple of songs. That sounded pretty fucked up but we didn't care. We sent that Fucker everywhere to get gigs and it worked. In December 2004 we headed into a studio in Gent Belgium and recorded 'The holy grail' - our first studio recording and released it by ourselves and it got great reviews.


WHAT'S ABOUT YOUR FOLLOWING?

Following? Do we have one?? I know there are a bunch of people who actually like what we do but we are not really doing a lot of thinking on whether people like us or not. We just do what we want to do.


THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTS IN YOUR HISTORY?

Well we did a lot of cool gigs in The Netherlands but the real highlight was the gig at Doom Shall Rise festival which was really awesome, and we did a small Germany tour with our Belgian sludge friends MOSE. That band kicks ass by the way, and off course our releases. But we are more busy with the future nowadays.


ANY INTRODUCTIVE WORDS ABOUT "FROM COSMOS TO CHAOS"?

Well listen to it and doom out, go nuts, bang your head, drink beer and smoke dope on it!!!


THE SOUND IS PURE DOOM MUSIC...

Yeah, we think we pretty much achieved a doomy atmosphere on that one. But speaking in Heavy Lord terms, Doom for us is not only about playing slow and tune down guitars. It's much more about the feeling we get when we play the songs. People will always have different opinions on what kind of influences we have an what kind of style we play but it's just music you know!! We play what we want to play and it sounds doomy to us. Still I'm glad most of the listeners get the point we try to make.


IT SEEMS YOU DON'T LIKE LIGHT...

O we like light and we also like flowers and springtime, little lambs, bees and butterflies!! We like to put on training suits and go to the mall with our wives and have babies!! Hahaha but on a serious note, You can not play the music we play and sing About nice stuff can you?


WHAT'S ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF ALBUM?

We think the production is quite good but there are always better ways to do it and that’s exactly what we want to achieve with our next record which we are going to record in December January. Still we like raw but clear sound for our songs.


ANY PARTICULAR CONCEPT CONCERNING THE ALBUM?

There is not really a concept of the album, I mean, some lyrics have similar issues to it but not intentional. They're just 5 songs of which we thought would make a good and consistent album. Some of the songs are actually even older than the first record!


WHAT'S THE MOOD OF IT?

The mood is depressions, the lows of a lifetime, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and more fun stuff like that.


THE MOST SALIENT ASPECTS OF YOUR NEW ALBUM?

We hope we can write a good song on our own terms you know. If that comes along as a salient thing on this album we would be very happy. And the riffs off course.


WHAT'S ABOUT THE FEEDBACK?

We got great response from the record so we got more gigs and more contacts. But it’s also a stepping stone for us, and the next record is going to be a step higher and when you listen to it when it is released you will know what I’m talking about!!


WHAT DO YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR SOUND?

We want people to listen to our music and try to understand what the point is. But most off all we want people to enjoy it and have a good time while listening to it or when they see us live!!


TOURING PLANS?

Yeah!! We definitely want to tour sometime if there is an opportunity and I’m sure there will be one. World wide doom if you ask me!! As long as we can play everywhere and reach a lot of people with our music its all good!!


YOUR LIFE'S PHILOSOPHY?

Live life to the fullest and make people remember you for what you are instead of what you are trying to be!! Just rock’n’roll and have good times and burn the fucking stage!!!


THE FUTURE OF THE BAND?

Well, as I mentioned before we are very busy creating our new record and finish all the new songs we have. It will be Heavy as fuck again but with some new vibes, twists and turns to it. The rest of the time we will continue to do gigs everywhere we can and drink more beer and stuff you know.
